Earth Hour - A Fight Against Global Warming

I'm just one Person,

What can i do about global Warming,

I try to be Envorimentaly Aware,

I try not to be Wasteful,

I try to do the Right Thing,

But I'm Just one Person,

On 31 March 2007. One city make a powerful statement about the urgent need for action on Global Warming. BY TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS exactly at 07:30pm. 2.2 Million People in Sydney turn off their lights.

What began as a city taking a stand. Caught the attention of the World. And in 2008.

EARTH HOUR WENT GLOBAL

Earth hour 2008 brought together 35 Countries & Over 370 cities. Millions give support globally. In Australia alone 58% of Australian Adults Participated. This year it stopped being Sydney event AND becoming a Global Movement. It is estimated that globally 50 million people took part in Earth Hour 2008. Help make us 2009 even bigger.

What is Earth Hour?

On 28 March 09 the movement is hoping that a total of 1 billion people worldwide will turn off their lights for one hour, from 20h00 to 21h00 (SA time), for Earth Hour 2009, a global event using mass action to campaign against global warming and climate change.

Earth Hour is not about saving electricity.

According to the official website,

“It’s much broader than that – it is a symbolic action to show governments that the people of the world want an effective global climate deal at the end of 2009.”

Join us for EARTH HOUR at 8:30pm Saturday 28 March 2009.

Global Warming - An Inconvenient Truth

Global Warming. An inconvenient truth. It's quite new to Malaysians. Sometime we often hear some people says I've never heard of it or i don't know what it is. What is it anyway?

It's actually entrapment of Infrared radiation "heat" in our earth system due to the presence of CO2 (carbon dioxide) or green gases. These green gases thicken due to release of CO2 & make heat wave trapped inside the earth system. What's the consequences ?

- dlm erti kata lain adalah "semakin byk pelepasan gas-gas (seperti carbon dioxide) di ruang udara akan menyebabkan pemanasan bumi kerana lebih banyak infrared (inframerah) terperangkap".

The entrapment of this heat will result in temperature rise. A research from sample taken (from ice) 1860 to 2000 shows the temperature rises significantly thru the years. These happen when the human population emerge & use fossil fuel quite extensively resulting the release of huge amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

This picture shows evidence of effects of global warming. The extra heat that been trap in earth atmosphere makes our earth a little more hotter than usual. The picture shows evidence of the effects in Argentina. We can see clearly what have happen. Picture 1920 vs 2004. The effect of this will be melting of ice at the place where it was not supposed to be. Places like Mount Kilimanjaro, Alps in Italy, Peru, Lake chad in Nigeria & North Pole are evidence of what had happen due to global warming.

But this is just the beginning. There will be more to come effects to come if we don't do something. Let me tell you some of tragedy that already took place due to this global warming :-

1. Hurricane Katrina (thousands perish in U.S)

2. Flood in China & other parts of the world.

3. Severe drought in places such as Africa.
(due to evaporation of moisture from soil)

There are other disasters which occur by this effect. If you notice its actually already reached our doorsteps. If you can recall we have huge floods in unexpected areas in Johor recent year. And we also have floods in Malaysia even though its not the raining season.

The sums of all fear is this. If half of Greenland & half of west Antarctica broke up & melted. 20 feet of water rise might occurs. This will eventually perish some of our coastal cities such as JB, Klang, KB, Kuantan & others. This is no joke. It might happen. If this happen i think we need to redrawn our world map. And this is actually is happening as we speak (please refer Greenland Picture)

We must act now. Together with people's around the world to fight this common threat. We Malaysian have the ability to do this. Each of one of us contributes to global warming. But each of us, can make choices to minimise that. With the things we buy, the electricity we use, the car we drive, we can make choices to bring our individual carbon emission to zero. The solution is in our hand.We just need determination.

These are some of the measures we can individually take to fight this threat.

1- Enhanced Energy Efficiency (Using of energy saving appliances)

2- Less dependent on fossil fuel (use public transport, hybrid cars & etc2)

3- Urge our politician (BN or PR) to impose more stringent policy (environment policy)

4- Using renewable energy (solar power, etc2)

5- Make climate-friendly choices in our personal lives

It is our task to rise to secure our own future. That if we don't do something, I feel that we could really lose it. That what we take for granted now might not be there for our children.
