On 31 March 2007. One city make a powerful statement about the urgent need for action on Global Warming. BY TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS exactly at 07:30pm. 2.2 Million People in Sydney turn off their lights.
What began as a city taking a stand. Caught the attention of the World. And in 2008.
EARTH HOUR WENT GLOBAL
Earth hour 2008 brought together 35 Countries & Over 370 cities. Millions give support globally. In Australia alone 58% of Australian Adults Participated. This year it stopped being Sydney event AND becoming a Global Movement. It is estimated that globally 50 million people took part in Earth Hour 2008. Help make us 2009 even bigger.
What is Earth Hour?
On 28 March 09 the movement is hoping that a total of 1 billion people worldwide will turn off their lights for one hour, from 20h00 to 21h00 (SA time), for Earth Hour 2009, a global event using mass action to campaign against global warming and climate change.
Earth Hour is not about saving electricity.
According to the official website,
“It’s much broader than that – it is a symbolic action to show governments that the people of the world want an effective global climate deal at the end of 2009.”
